È una label specializzata soprattutto nella pubblicazione di antologie delle carriere di vecchie band anni '60 (The Herd, The Sorrows, The Knickerbockers) e versioni definitive di rari e classici album (il debutto di Duncan Browne, Skip Bifferty, Tinkerbell’s Fairydust) usciti in origine tra il 1966 e il 1970, il Il tutto arricchito da artwork attraenti, rare foto, liner notes esaustive e qualità ottima di suono ottenuta dai masters originali.

Numerosi sono anche i corposi e preziosi cofanetti editi dalla Grapefruit negli ultimi tempi, catalogati anche per anni e generi: l'elenco è molto lungo, l'ultimo di 3 CD in ordine di tempo successivo a questo "Can't Seem To Come Down - The American Sounds Of 1968 " (uscito il 19 Luglio 2024) preso qui in esame è "Pour A Little Sugar On It - The Chewy Chewy Sounds of American Bubblegum 1966-1971" (27 Settembre 2024), 3 CD e 91 brani per 4 ore di durata, un'antologia della nascente disimpegnata, canzonettistica bubblegum music dei tardi anni '60 attraverso hit singles, brani cult da collezione e oscuri episodi tratti da albums di The Archies, The Monkees, Ohio Express, 1910 Fruitgum, The Lemon Pipers, Crazy Elephant e tantissimi altri. "March Of The Flower Children - American Sounds Of 1967" invece, datato 11 Agosto 2023, attraverso 3 CD e 85 brani esplorava soprattutto la nascente psichedelia americana di quell'annata irripetibile.

"Can't Seem To Come Down  - The American Sounds Of 1968" (Grapefruit Records, 3 CD)

Subito dopo la Grapefruit ci riprova e fa un altro centro, "Can't Seem To Come Down  - The American Sounds Of 1968" è un altro preziosissimo cofanetto di 3 CD per un totale di 79 brani pubblicati in quella lontana annata su vinile (singoli, 33 giri, 7"): si tratta di nuova musica americana che pur raccogliendo, come scrive David Wells nell'intro del libretto interno del box, l'eredità artistica di quella 'summer of love' che era sbocciata nel 1967 è 'disturbata' dagli avvenimenti politici, in primis la guerra in Vietnam. Queste le significative parole pronunciate a fine 1967 da Derek Taylor (famoso giornalista, scrittore e addetto ai lavori musicale britannico conosciuto per il suo lavoro con i Beatles) e riportate da Wells: "Le uniche persone che useranno il termine 'psychedelico' nel 1968 saranno i TV comedians e i disk jockeys con il cervello fulminato". In quel tumultuoso, fatidico 1968 sono molti i nuovi stimolanti appeal sonori che nacquero o continuarono a progredire, tutti presenti in questo cofanetto: pop e bubblegum music (The Monkees, Tommy James & The Shondells, 1910 Fruitgum Co.), psichedelia (Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Grateful Dead), garage rock (The Seeds, Electric Prunes, The Beau Brummels), country rock (Buffalo Springfield, The Band), folk rock (The Byrds) songwriters (Tom Rush, Bob Dylan, Del Shannon), hard/heavy rock (Steppenwolf, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly).

A essere contemplati bands e nomi noti e notissimi alle cronache rock oltre a quelli già succitati (parliamo di Spirit, The Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, The Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground etc...) e meno noti, ma ben conosciuti dagli appassionati e dagli addetti ai lavori (Strawberry Alarm Clock, Merrell Fankhauser, The United States Of America, The Kaleidoscope, The Human Beinz, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, We The People, etc...). La porzione dei 3 CD più esaltante e interessante in assoluto è comunque quella rappresentata dalle songs di nomi assolutamente di nicchia o sconosciuti (Brian Hyland, The Baroque Monthly, Spontaneous Corruption, Crystal Chandelier, Piece Kor, The Savage Resurrection, The Baroque Monthly, Brass Buttons, The Yankee Dollar, October Country, The Peppermint Trolley Company, Glad, The Millennium, etc...): in molti casi i brani sono gli unici singoli di giovani high-school bands della profonda provincia americana - sempre parole di Wells - che visitavano eccitate gli studios locali per preservare per i posteri il loro sound grezzo e vergine, prima che il mondo reale/e probabilmente il Vietnam/ intervenisse (a rovinare la festa).

Per i millenials e/o i neofiti disponibili (si spera) al recupero di un passato favoloso "Can't Seem To Come Down  - The American Sounds Of 1968" è una ricchissima miniera vergine d'inestimabile valore, da esplorare scavando con le unghie e con certosino effetto retroattivo per estrarne innumerevoli pepite musicali. Il cofanetto contiene un prezioso e magnifico booklet di 48 pagine con note accurate per ogni brano e band sempre curato da David Wells. L'antenato per eccellenza di scavi archeologici musicali del genere nonché eterna pietra di paragone è naturalmente il doppio "Nuggets (Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968)", 27 brani curati da Lennye Kaye usciti per l'Elektra nel 1972: nel 1998, la Rhino Records ripubblicò il tutto in un imponente cofanetto composto da 4 CD di cui il primo contenente tutte le tracce del disco originale, gli altri 3 altri brani usciti nel periodo 1965-1968, in tutto 118 brani. Ma Can't Seem To Come Down  - The American Sounds Of 1968 è opera ancora più capillare perche' esplora a fondo e in tutte le sue sfaccettature una sola annata musicale e artistica, in questo senso è assolutamente fondamentale.
